Relief for Lower Back Pain in Maryland: Expert Care for a Better You!

Lower back pain is one of my favorite things to treat—it was my first love as a physical therapist. This passion likely stems from my time in PT school, where there was a strong emphasis on research, hands-on techniques, and understanding how to effectively treat lower back pain. When I graduated, I felt so confident about helping people in this area, and that confidence has only grown through experience.

I’ve also learned, both professionally and personally, how much lower back pain can affect your life. You feel it in your posture, everyday movements, and even activities that don’t directly involve your lower back. When you finally find relief, it’s almost as if you’ve gotten your life back. That transformation is truly incredible to witness.Lower back pain is a complex diagnosis—it’s rarely a one-size-fits-all situation.

There are so many aspects of the body to assess to uncover the root cause. So, bear with me as I break it all down for you. Below, you WON'T find the text boxes of symptoms, causes, treatment options, and the reason why is there is something MORE IMPORTANT THAT I NEED YOU TO UNDERSTAND.

Lower Back Pain.....Let's Talk About It.

I cannot EMPHASIZE this ENOUGH! I truly believe that the most important first step to figuring out the root cause of ANY musculoskeletal issue is EXAMINATION! A very thorough examination where you take the time to talk about the the pain history, the current symptoms that you are dealing with, the nature of the pain, the movements/activities/posture that relates to the pain, etc. ALL THESE DETAILS matter!! And here's the reason why.....

Once your  PT has evaluated you, next comes the appropriate manual technique, exercise program, education and such. So if the thorough examination is not completed, did they prescribe you the BEST next course of treatment? It's like a domino affect. If the PT does not appropriately gather and critically think about what is going on in your body, then the next step is a hit or miss. That domino affect is likely a better result if the evaluation was thorough and detailed. Get my drift? And, yes it is possible, we as PTs can miss things or mistakes can happen however, it is truly our job as a physical therapist that we are constantly evaluating each session to give you the next best course of action!

I will also say this, I have been a PT for almost 12 years now. When it comes to the first evaluation and meeting a person for the first time, it still takes me at least 30 minutes of reviewing their history then another 30 min give or take of the physical examination. What I'm trying to say is this...if you're evaluation is short and sweet, it wasn't very thorough. And I get it, sometimes we as PTs can't figure out everyone on the first visit but you want and deserve the best first visit so whatever is the next step is the best step. Isn't that what you are paying for? Aren't you seeking for answers? Don't you want to start to get better ASAP, but "save it for next time?"

How Can 4Th Trimester PT Help Me With My Lower Back Pain?

As you may have read that the evaluation is KEY! At 4th Trimester PT, I will spend at least an hour to learn about your medical history, your current symptoms and complete the physical examination. I have all my patient fill out their forms and then go over it again with them in person. That is because details matter!

You will leave your first session with a better understanding of what is going on whether is it how to calm down the pain ASAP, what exercises to start with, or whatever may be appropriate be, on the first day you will be treated!

You will have access to me via text/email/zoom in between sessions to have an open communication how what is working well or what is not. That way we can "nip it in the bud" of something that is not working or progress you at home until your next session. I don't like to waste time, it is too valuable and of the essence when healing. I also, pride myself on having open communication with my patients to provide reassurance with exercises or alleviate any mental load, if you have any questions!
